A Well-Being Week in Law 2021 Dance Party
My favorite songs are those that uplift, inspire, or impart some deeper meaning about life. That’s the power of music put to its most worthwhile purpose.
On the heels of Well-Being Week in Law 2021, I’m excited to share with you this personally curated playlist of songs that inspire a brighter look at life. Each track touches on one of the themes we discussed in last week’s Well-Being in Law blog series: physical well-being, spiritual well-being, personal growth, social well-being, and emotional well-being.
In one of those articles, we talked about the value of exploring new music, as well as incorporating familiar favorites into your workday. Music can transform our working atmosphere and our feelings of energy. At the same time, expanding our musical horizons can keep us operating in an environment of growth. I hope these selections will help you accomplish each of those aims.
There are 60 tracks altogether, streaming on your platform of choice: Spotify or Apple Music. Here are just a few of my favorites:
Feeling Good by Michael Bublé
Michael Bublé’s larger-than-life reimagining of this old stage staple is the perfect overture for our Florida Well-Being in Law playlist.
Ok, All Right by David Archuleta
Selected with my fellow Millennial lawyers in mind, this exercise in positive reframing comes from the “American Idol” alumni’s latest album, appropriately entitled Therapy Sessions.
Greet the Day by Amy Grant
Lawyers wake up each morning to unforeseen interactions, surprises, and challenges. This song’s positive morning mindset reminds us to approach those unpredictables with emotional regulation and spiritual well-being top of mind.
Almost There by Anika Noni Rose (from Walt Disney Pictures’ The Princess and the Frog)
A song about hard work and delayed satisfaction with success on the horizon, this Princess and the Frog toe-tapper marries a message of optimism with a reminder that we are each in charge of our own well-being!
Higher Love by Kygo & Whitney Houston
Princess Tiana might have told us that dancing has to wait a while, but we know that getting up and grooving is good for body, mind, and spirit. That’s why this recently unearthed Whitney Houston cover of an 80s pop classic is included. It’s imminently danceable, with skyward lyrics that resonate with Well-Being Week in Law’s spiritual well-being aims.
Go High by Kelly Clarkson
The next time you have a difficult negotiation, turn to this anthem for professionalism and civility.
Open a New Window by Angela Lansbury and the Original Broadway Cast of Mame
A song inspired by the most famous line in Patrick Dennis’s classic 1955 novel, Auntie Mame, and its later stage adaptation: “Life’s a banquet, and most poor suckers are starving to death.” It’s all about embracing life to the fullest.
Is That All There Is? by Peggy Lee
Life’s little fires can seem like catastrophes at the time. The iconic Peggy Lee’s perspective makes those flames feel less intense.
We Can Work It Out by The Beatles
Difficult client? Disagreeable opposing counsel? Just keep singing these McCartney/Lennon lyrics to yourself for focus and reassurance.
Hats by Amy Grant
Most of us have to wear a lot of hats in life. “Lawyer” is just one of them. The exasperated mom-turned-music superstar singing this early-90s jam can relate. It’s musical therapy for the overburdened.
Get Happy / Happy Days Are Here Again by Barbra Streisand & Judy Garland
With the U.S. vaccine rollout well underway, I can’t help hearing this one in my head. Here’s to happier days ahead!
